The Wayhouses

The good cup

Written for readers who have finished Book 1.

The good cup

Toll's own cup is the one good piece of crockery in the col-house: finer ceramic, a truer glaze, left behind years ago in some traveller's pack. It does not live on the shelf with the rough common cups. It sits on its own small ledge by the hearth, and at the end of every day Toll drinks his mountain tisane from it. He has never said what the cup means to him. When he hands it to someone else one evening, he doesn't explain that either.
