The First Kettle

Oswyn has built roads for twenty-two years, and the path over the col is the hardest, and the last. The day the final stretch is finished, he climbs to the top to make his closing notes — and cannot make himself walk back down.

There is nothing below that needs him, and nothing left in him to carry there. So he stays. He boils water in the copper kettle that has crossed every road with him, and when the first cold traveller comes over the saddle, he does the one thing his hands still know: he offers what he has. Then he starts rebuilding the old shepherd's wall.

A wall. A fire. A warm place with water at the top of a hard climb — and, without meaning to, a light the dark can steer by.

A gentle novella of endings, stillness, and the beginning of The Wayhouses.
