The books

A trilogy and a prequel

On the open moor where four roads meet, Wren keeps the busiest house on the road. At its centre runs a long wooden table, always laid, with a candle that never goes out — so that anyone crossing the dark can steer by the one warm point of light and know a place is kept for them.

On the last quiet night before the road fills, a scholar who has chosen her solitude takes the far end of the board and will not be drawn up it. Then the travellers pour in, more than her benches can seat, and Wren meets them the only way she knows: more benches, more bread, more candles. But the scholar has asked her a question she cannot answer, and it will not leave her.

A warm, low-stakes cozy fantasy about loneliness, being known, and the light that is always kept.

Book One

One More Place Set

Coming soon

The crossroads on the open moor charges the road nothing. A long table always laid, a candle that never goes out, a place set for every traveller the four roads send. That is the whole worth of the house, and Wren has kept it so for fifteen years.

One hard autumn, the Guild of Roads proposes to make the junction official: a licensed waypoint, a scheduled service, a levy on the house. Wren fights to keep her table open to all, and runs herself into the ground doing it. Then Cade, a wagon-driver who has been coming back through since spring, lets the season's biggest haul go so he can stay and help. And the keeper who sets a place for everyone has no idea how to be looked after herself.

A warm, quietly moving cozy fantasy about worth, being kept, and a light that has never had a price.

Book Two

The Crossroads Winter

Coming soon

Word comes in off all four roads that this winter will be the worst in an age. Wren lays in stores and watches the sky — and when the storm falls it drifts every road shut, and the crossroads becomes the one gathering point for miles.

They arrive out of the white by the road-full: cold and frightened and unable to go on, more than forty with nowhere to go until the thaw. Wren takes them all in — a place for everyone, the candle burning at the centre through the dark. But holding a large, restless company through days of impassable roads asks more than bread and benches. At the end of her strength, in front of the whole table, a stranded traveller asks her the question she has always stepped aside from: is there someone who does this for you?

The warm, deeply moving close of The Long Table.

Book Three

And No One Ate Alone

Coming soon

Long before Wren, the crossroads is only a stop — a traveller pays, sleeps and moves on, and the guests sit at separate tables. Brin keeps it as it has always been kept: fairly, plainly, and no more.

Then a hard winter comes down, and a woman stops on the frozen road within sight of his light and cannot make herself come in. Something in Brin will not let it be. He sets a single candle at the centre of the long table, burning whether anyone comes or not, and lays one extra place for whoever is still on the road after dark. He only cannot bear anyone eating alone. But one small act at a time, a plain man at a lonely crossing begins a thing that will outlast him by lifetimes.

A gentle novella of a hard winter, a kept light, and the beginning of The Long Table.
